"In a remarkable new finding, BMP-activated Smad1 and TGF?-activated Smad2/3 bind to p68, a component of the microRNA (miRNA) processing complex DROSHA, to target the primary miR-21 transcript (primiR- 21) for miR-21 production in vascular smooth muscle cells (Davis et al., 2008). The miRNA miR-21 induces a contractile cell phenotype by downregulating the suppressor PDCD4."
